Modi In Action – A Perfect Handshake
It is a treat for me to watch our current prime minister in action; with time, he has mastered the techniques of using body language effectively. The very day he got sworn in as the prime minster, Modi had invited all SAARC nation leaders to come and meet with him. The below picture is the one you probably remember seeing sprawled across all newspapers and television clips covering Narendra Modi meeting Pakistan’s prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
But if you had watched the video clips closely enough, this is how it actually played out
While the world over, you see politicians trying their best to stand on the left side of the frame during photo shoots, in order to appear dominant and powerful, (read article Power Plays during Handshakes) here is one man who deliberately allowed his counterpart to take that space. I believe this deliberate move on Modi’s part is to want Sharif to feel important and welcome. He is also trying to ensure that attitude of the leaders be the last thing to further tense up the already distraught relation that we have with our neighbor.
This strategic use of body language not only showcases Modi’s understanding of nonverbal communication but also highlights how such subtle cues can have a massive impact on career success in leadership roles. Leaders who effectively use body language can foster trust, create rapport, and manage delicate situations better.
Modi’s gesture was not merely about positioning but also about sending a message of reconciliation and goodwill. This kind of calculated communication is a critical skill for any leader aspiring for success, whether in politics, business, or any other field.

FAQ’s
What does a handshake reveal about leadership intent?
A handshake, particularly in high-visibility settings, often signals more than greeting it reflects intent, relational positioning, and situational awareness. Leaders may use it to assert control, convey equality, or intentionally reduce perceived hierarchy depending on context.
How do leaders use body language to manage power dynamics?
Experienced leaders adjust their nonverbal behaviour to either reinforce or soften power. This may include spatial positioning, timing of gestures, or allowing the other party visual prominence especially when the objective is to build comfort rather than dominance.
Why is nonverbal communication critical in sensitive negotiations?
In tense or politically delicate environments, verbal messages are often filtered or guarded. Nonverbal cues, however, tend to carry emotional intent more directly, making them essential for signalling openness, restraint, or reassurance without escalation.
What is behavioural intelligence in leadership contexts?
Behavioural intelligence refers to the ability to observe, interpret, and consciously adapt one’s visible behaviour in response to situational demands. It combines awareness of self-presentation with an understanding of how others are likely to perceive and react.
Can subtle body language choices influence organisational culture?
Yes, over time, repeated behavioural patterns from senior leaders shape what is seen as acceptable or effective within an organisation. Small, consistent signals such as how leaders greet, position themselves, or acknowledge others gradually define interpersonal norms.
