VIRAT KOHLI & ROHIT SHARMA RELATION ANALYSIS – IS THERE A CONFLICT
AS FEATURED ON ECONOMIC TIMES ON 2 AUG 2019
Kohli and Sharma appear to respect each other’s game but at a personal level they are not very close, even from the beginning of this world cup. We do observe a lot more distance between them in the last few days. The recent press conference 3 days back reveals Kohli to be under high stress, either because the rumours are true or else because he is made to answer questions which are nothing to do with Cricket as a sport or him as a captain.
The press conference after India lost against New Zealand, Kohli appears controlled. The hand which is resting on his opposite arm remains closed for most of the interview. He is guarded throughout and we do not observe him to be showing any different emotion / reaction when he analyzes Sharma as against any other player.
Kohli is impatient while Sharma is answering.. lip compression, shifting weight. It shows he wants Sharma to end his answer soon. He pats Sharma on the back. What is noticeable is that Sharma does that back, which is difficult to understand if Sharma accepts Kohli to be the leader and patting him to encourage him. Hug at the end of the clip is very distanced.
As soon as Kohli mentions 2011 was a miss for you, we see Sharma showing dislike for this and closing down (hands from back go directly in his pockets). Sharma definitely does not like being reminded about being left out of World Cup 2011. Could be a source of stress for Sharma.
When asked about rift, you see Kohli constantly massaging his hand with the thumbs, trying to calm himself down. It sure is causing him stress to be answering this question. Though he appears calm by his flowing speech and voice control, the thumbs tell us a different story.
You see here a look of high stress (fear in eyes and tension on forehead) when told that the “rift” is recent. He also swallows hard. He is definitely finding a lot of stress in this question. This would be only if the question being asked is one that matters to him. There is one more significant body language that we see in Kohli – when he says that there is no rift between them, only his left shoulder shrugs (seen in Kohli from time to time but it is not periodic and definitely missing at the beginning of the World Cup press conference of all Captains) A single sided shoulder shrug indicates that the person does not totally believe what he is saying.
On the field there are lots of pictures of the two coming close together, maybe celebrating as well, but at these times there is missing eye contact which is a bit unnatural especially when you are celebrating triumph with your team player.
Again a lot of times we notice that Sharma is the one who puts his hands over Kohli when they are getting clicked together. One would put the arm around another when they want to show they belong together. Notice this arm is not around the shoulder or waist but rather such that it rests on the neck. Maybe Sharma is a bit more dominant than Kohli.
There are far fewer pics where we see Kohli putting his arm around Sharma and the level at which he is touching is different – less dominant.
Forced contact – the hand is very stiff and the smile is controlled for Sharma and social smile on Kohli
Here is another forced contact, where Kohli seems to be actually restraining Sharma from coming too close to him.
Here is a picture from before the world cup.. look at the distance between the two, its remarkably less than in the recent pics. Also, the smiles on their faces are genuine happiness, and they appear relaxed in each other’s company. Maybe there are moments during the game when they feel close.
The gap between the two which tells you about the fact that they may not be too close on a personal level. These are not very recent pics. The gap is pic 2 is rather awkward.

FAQ’s
What does body language reveal about unresolved leadership conflict?
Unresolved conflict often appears through micro-behaviours rather than overt disagreement. Guarded postures, reduced eye contact, forced proximity, and self-regulatory gestures signal internal tension that words actively manage or suppress.
Why is stress visible even when leaders sound calm and controlled?
Verbal fluency can be rehearsed; physiological responses cannot. Self-touching, lip compression, swallowing, and asymmetrical gestures often emerge when a leader is managing psychological discomfort while maintaining composure.
How do dominance cues affect perceived leadership authority?
Touch placement, spatial control, and initiation of contact subtly communicate hierarchy. When these cues are inconsistent or contested, it can signal ambiguity in authority or unspoken competition within leadership relationships.
What is the significance of asymmetrical gestures in leadership communication?
Single sided movements such as one-shoulder shrugs often indicate internal conflict or partial disbelief. In leadership contexts, these moments can undermine credibility even when the verbal message is aligned.
Can nonverbal signals contradict public narratives of unity?
Yes. Leaders may verbally assert alignment while their body language reflects emotional distance or strain. Over time, teams tend to trust observed behaviour more than stated intent, affecting morale and cohesion.
